Should Animal Welfare Be Defined in Terms of Consciousness?

Abstract Definitions of animal welfare often invoke consciousness or sentience. Marian Stamp Dawkins has argued that to define this way is a mistake. In Dawkins’s alternative view, an with good one healthy and “has what it wants.” The dispute highlights source strain on the concept welfare: consciousness-involving definitions are better able capture normative significance welfare, whereas consciousness-free facilitate validation indicators. I reflect how field should respond strain, ultimately recommending against splitting in favor definitions.
